What is bounce rate and why visitors bounce

Bounce rate is a factor that often haunts web marketers and is used in web site traffic analysis. It represents the percentage of initial visitors to a site who "bounce" away to a different site, rather than continue on to other pages within the same site.Of course there is no limit on standard maximum or minimum time by which a visitor must leave in order for the bounce to occur. A visitor can bounce from one particular website by any one of the following

1. By clicking on the link to a page on different website.
2. Closing an open window or tab
3. By typing a new URL
4. Clicking the BACK button to leave the website.
5. Session timeout(usually 30 minutes)

There is formula for calculating the bounce rate which is the number of visitors who enter the site at a page and leave within the specified timeout period without viewing another page, divided by the total number of visitors who entered the site at that page.
Bounce rate effectively measures the effectiveness of the entry page and if the bounce rate for a particular page is low it means that the page is effective and is causing the visitors to view more pages and go deeper into the website. It is very hard to get a bounce rate under 20% and the bounce rate over 35% is a cause of concern and bounce rate over 50% is a cause of worry for the website.

Why visitors leave? There are a number of reasons why, among them:

Poor site design – If your website is not a visual treat, rather it is dull or it is not interactive then the visitors wont like like it and will leave immediately.

How good is your content? – If your content is sub-par and not informative you can’t expect people to stick around.Interactive webdesign can only hold visitors attention only for some time and if the content is not standard, visitor will not hang around your website and will immediately leave your webpage.

How to bring down or decrease the bounce rate of your website?

There are a number of factors that we should pay attention to compel users to stay on the site and thus decrease the bounce rate. Following are the some of the steps that I follow for my website and I hope it should be useful to you also

industry is getting some inside information that Google could be using bounce rates to determine top page rankings (especially on top pages of Google search results ranging from pages 1-10).
This technique could be used to ward-off black hat SEO sites which are artificially optimized for unrelated keywords. These websites will naturally display high bounce rates and will be ranked much lower.
